January 21st Catch of the Day – OHN

Sunday, January 21st, 2007

I, Full Monty, am pleased to bring you some local flavor as my “Catch of the Day”. I give you Austin’s own – OHN. This local band, OHN (pronounced “own”) has actually been around for a few years, and are putting the final touches on their 3rd album. Bill Sarver is one of the founding members of this mellow electronic band, which produces hypnotic chill beats accompanied by live instruments and vocals. Their sound can be funky at times, due to their selection of beats. However, the mix of guitar and violins that have been processed with a synthesizer keep the chill ambience alive. The difference with this third album, Revolutionary Revolution, is the beautiful vocals of Allison Scharf, who is the newest addition to the band. Her sensual vocals are the biggest change on this new album from the previous two, and work perfectly with the trip hop, jazzy sounds of the band. Look for the new album to come out in late February. My song selection is The Beatles cover of Dear Prudence.

Ghostland at the Opera

Saturday, January 20th, 2007

Last Friday (01/19), I experienced my first live Ghostland Observatory concert at UT’s Hogg Auditorium. All I can say is that these guys know how to put on a show. Thomas Turner and Aaron Behrens are the two behind the electro-rock band, which is based here in Austin. They performed to a sold out venue while incorporating an awesome display of lights and lasers for the first time. Aaron, who commands lead vocals, really takes charge of the stage by dancing around and feeding off the energy from the music. I haven’t seen such stage charisma since the likes of Dave Gahan, Ian Astbury, and even Mick Jagger. He really got the crowd pumping with his style of singing, and through his command of the stage. But let’s not forget about Thomas Turner who programed the bands electronics, played the keyboard, and even busted out on the live drums. Thomas endulged himself in the technology by creating sounds that worked perfectly with the whole live experience. His beats, either programmed or live drums, pounded throughtout the auditorium and took full control of the audience. When you mix the sounds of Ghostland with the full laser/light show, what you come out with is pure magic. I think these guys will have a great future and will be around for quite some time. Expect to see Ghostland Observatory again in March for SXSW.

Bjork Teaming Up With Timbaland?

Thursday, January 18th, 2007

Yes, it is true. Bjork is currently in the studio recording the follow up album to 2004’s Medulla. One of the producer’s that she is teaming up with on the untitled album happens to be the man who is working on everyone’s records – Timbaland. Yes, I said Timbaland. This is the same man who has produced hits from Justin Timberlake, Nelly Furtado, and The Pussycat Dolls. The new album, which is set to come out in early spring, will have a different sound from Bjork’s previous work in the past. Also, information from Bjork’s website reports a tour to follow the release of the new album. This looks like a busy year from the Icelandic pixie, and it should be pretty rewarding for the fans.

January 14th Catch of the Day – Faithless

Monday, January 15th, 2007

The Full Monty has delivered a “Chillville Top 10″ song of 2006. Faithless released a new album just a couple of months ago, which featured collaborations with Dido, Cat Power, and Robert Smith. This new album was spawned after the band was throwing around the idea of taking a permanent break from recording. They were saying goodbye to their fans by releasing a greatest hits package that came out in 2005 and embarking on a farwell tour. However, they received much love on the road and fans really let them know that they wanted more Faithless. The band came back and released one of their finest albums, To All New Arrivals, since 1999’s Sunday 8pm. My song choice is Last This Day, which features vocals from Dido who also appeared on the 1999 release. Enjoy!
