The Standing Chillville House Game

Friday, April 20th, 2007

In a coming post, I am going to tell you why radio is so much better today than it was back it what some dinosaurs call “the good old days.” (And while I don’t mean to get all mesozoiac on your ass, trust me…I’ve been at it for a minute).  One of the key reasons is that we can laterally integrate every stripe of web craziness into what we do.  Key among them:  MySpace.

I regularly troll the pages of our friends to see what they are listening to (I’m a huge Minus The Bear fan rightaboutnow) and what they are into.  What what I’m finding a lot of our listeners are into is…. (drum roll please) poker.  Me too (in fact my little consulting business has taken me to Atlantic City and Reno, NV in the last 3 weeks alone, and in both instances I pocketed a little coin from time spent immersed in Hold ‘Em).

So I’ve decided to start up a rotating Chillville House Game.  If you wanna get involved…here’s what you need to do: 1) make sure you are one of our friends on chillville’s myspace page right away; and 2) shoot me an email expressing your interest and what night you’d do it.

Here’s the fine print and mumbo jumbo:  We’re not playing for money, just fun.  There are no prizes at stake.  You have to be 21 and show me your ID, in the event adult bevvies are present.  This is in no way sanctioned or authorized by 101-X or Emmis Communications whatsoever in any fashion.  Guess that’s about it.

April 15th Catch of the Day – Bjork

Monday, April 16th, 2007

Bjork is set to release her new album, Volta, on the 8th of May. She has brought on the likes of Timbaland to help produce a few tracks, so expect a little bit different sound from our favorite Icelandic pixie. My catch of the day happens to be one of the songs produced by Timbabland entitled “Earth Intruders”. Enjoy!

OHN Live In The Studio

Monday, April 16th, 2007

Local band, OHN, spent some time with us this morning on the show. Things were pretty crazy at the start due to technical difficulties; however, we ended up getting a nice interview and two tracks from the new album that was played live in our studio.

Here are the interview clips.

Here are both live performances.

April 8th Catch of the Day – Fujiya & Miyagi

Monday, April 9th, 2007

Don’t be confused by the name of the band. They are English, and they are a trio. Fujiya and Miyagi have formed the reputation of creating light hearted lyrics accompanied by heart pounding beats. They have been compared to both Hot Chip and LCD Soundsystem; however, the main thing that seperates them from others is the funk that is generated by both bass guitar and synthesizer. Their album, Transparent Things, is one of the finest so far this year and we should be bringing you more from the band in the weeks to come. My catch track is Sucker Punch. Enjoy!

“I just got back from Australia, and was happy to find they celebrate the death and resurrection of Christ the same way we do…telling our children that a giant bunny came and left chocolate eggs in the night.  Is it any wonder we’re f*(ked up as a race?”–Bill Hicks, Rant In E Minor

Here is the link to the Grindhouse film festival Ray was talking about.

Here is the link to the story by Marc Savlov in the Austin Chronicle where Robert Rodriguez explains how he and Tarantino got the idea (simultaneously) to do Grindhouse.

April 1st Catch of the Day – LCD Soundsystem

Monday, April 2nd, 2007

James Murphy, mastermind of the New York based band, has done it again. LCD Soundsystem has created another album worth all of the critical praise it’s received. Sound of Silver is the second full length which fuses a mixture of dance, punk, and indie into one wall of sound. My catch of the day is the mesmerizing Someone Great, which shows a more mellow side of the band. However, its groovy bass and beats will tempt you to tap your feet for its 6 plus minute running time.
