July 27th Catch of the Day – Primal Scream

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

Primal Scream has been one of my favorite bands since they released Screamadelica back in 1991. If you compile a list of best debut albums by an artist/band, then Screamadelica would make my top 10 list (along with Smashing Pumpkins’ Gish, Nine Inch Nails’ Pretty Hate Machine, STP’s Core, and Underworld’s Dubnobasswithmyheadman among others). Beautiful Future is their 9th full length studio LP and has already hit stores in the UK. As of yet it does not have a U.S. release date; however, we should see one in the near future. Primal Scream is one of those bands that constantly changes their sound with every release of an album. They can go to the psychedelic sounds on Screamadelica, the classic rock vibe on Give Out But Don’t Give Up, the electro funk grooves on XTRMNTR, to the country melodies on Riot City Blues. No matter which album you get- it will be something new, which is important in order for a band to have longevity. Today’s catch is the electronic sounding “I Love to Hurt (You Love to Be Hurt)”, which includes the vocals of Lovefoxxx from CSS. Enjoy!

Friday Night Decisions

Friday, July 25th, 2008

This episode of what you should see this week is all about breaking down your Friday choices; you’ve got a lot of very different genres to choose from, and Chillville is here to make it all a bit easier.

Choice one – a recommendation we’ve made before – is the Health show at Emo’s. These experimental noise-rockers from LA play to destroy their audience, and it’s pretty much guaranteed you will leave completely satisfied with your concert-going experience. As a bonus, you can occasionally meander over to the outdoor stage and catch Aesop Rock doing his much-lauded rap best to make you dance your butt off.

Sticking to the Red River district, recent Chillville guests Black Tie Dynasty will be grooving at Club DeVille. They, along with locals Follow That Bird! and Till We’re Blue Or Destroy, are opening for the Always Already, whose post-punk British-influenced sound should work perfectly with the rocky backdrop of DeVille’s stage.

You also have the option of venturing east of I-35 to Progress Coffee for the tail-end of Brazos‘ month-long residency. Their new album, chock –full of minimalist folk, drops soon, so this is the perfect time to check out the upcoming material away from the boisterousness of downtown Austin (and grab a mocha while you chill). Also-local and buzzed-about Sunset opens.

Chillville Video – Who’s Gonna Save My Soul by Gnarls Barkley

Friday, July 25th, 2008
This track was actually my “Catch of the Day” when Gnarls Barkley’s latest album dropped several months ago. I absolutely love this song, and think it’s one of their best. Well now the video has finally been released, and I am actually surprised that MTV didn’t ban this one (like they did for their first single “Run”). These guys are so creative and know how to entertain an audience, and this video is a perfect example of that. I need to warn you that some of the video is a little graphic; however, it is very comical and not meant to be taken seriously. Check it out right here

July 20th Catch of the Day – Tricky

Sunday, July 20th, 2008

Tricky is one of the original members of Massive Attack, and was a huge part of their success on the first two albums. He then parted ways in the mid 90’s and took on a solo career that had incredible buzz. Since then he has released several albums and worked with artists like Bjork, Live, and Garbage. His latest LP entitled Knowle West Boy drops here in the U.S. on September 9, and takes on his usual trip hop beats but with a mix of rock and reggae. One of the best things about Tricky is that he is never selfish with the vocals and recruits the talents of several different artists. However in true Tricky fashion, you can hear is dark, subtle voice in the background of most songs. Today’s catch, “Past Mistake”, is my favorite track on the new album. Enjoy!

Peter Gabriel’s Big Blue Ball

Sunday, July 13th, 2008

Today I made a hard decision of deciding what should be the “Catch of the Day”. It was between Imogen Heap or Big Blue Ball. Well, I ended up using Imogen Heap as my catch; however, I think this new side project by Peter Gabriel is worth blogging about. Big Blue Ball has been a 15 year love affair for Peter Gabriel and has finally been completed. It involves the talents of Sinead O’Connor, Tim Finn, Deep Forest, Joseph Arthur, Karl Wallinger of World Party, and was produced by Stephen Hague who is better known for his work with New Order. The album takes you on a trip through all parts of the world with sounds from the U.S., India, Ireland, and other areas that have been an influence for the artists involved. We played “Whole Thing”, which is one of the few tracks that Gabriel actually lends his voice to. In my opinion, this song is a masterpiece and is one of Gabriel’s most memorable performances. I have always been a big fan of his from his solo career to the film scores he has put together (The Last Temptation of Christ, Rabbit-Proof Fence), and it’s great to see that he’s back with an outstanding way to express his artistic talents. Go get this album!!!
