Wednesday and Thursday Shows

If you didn’t drop by the Mohawk after watching the debate last night, you missed a great band: Pattern Is Movement drove into town from LA yesterday and completely rocked a packed room that refused to leave without an encore. The vocals were intense and impressive, as were the drums; Chris Ward would probably win in any vote for ‘most likely to knock himself unconscious while in a percussion haze’ – his drumsticks were flying so fast there should have been smoke. Whenever these guys make it back to Austin, they are definitely worth checking out.

Tonight, you have a lot of great shows competing for your ears, so it’s really all about what you’re in the mood to hear. If you want to watch the Project Runway pre-finale episode, but still catch a show downtown, check out Side Bar for cheap drinks and a group of fellow Runway fans who’ll hiss at Kinley with you. Later shows that night are Rahim with locals Sad Accordions and Haunting Oboe Music at Emo’s, or the French female dance pop of Yelle at the Mohawk for something entirely different. Or if you’re feeling nostalgic for the late 90’s and don’t really care about your primetime TV viewing, catch the Presidents of the United States of America at Stubbs with local dance-rockers the Black and White Years, who’ve been getting some major love on the request lines of 101X lately.

For Thursday, most of the awesome options are there to rock your face off. Rough-and-ready punk rockers Monotonix from Israel are at the Mohawk; expect lots of crazy spastic flailing (from both crowd and band), spilled drinks, and a performance for which the description ‘audience interaction’ isn’t strong enough. If you’re more in the mood for some good old-fashioned dance-floor antics, Shiny Toy Guns at the Parish is for you.
