Welcome to another fun filled edition of Chillville. We should have ticket giveaways for Lykke Li, and Citizen Cope, so be sure to tune in for your chance to win. Also, don’t forget about our “Homegrown Chill” show that is coming up on February 18, featuring Govinda, OHN, and Shuttle Debris.
Chris Trew (aka Terp 2 it), Tammy Nelson, and Mike Felton will be joining us live in the studio. If you want to get involved, then contact the company at thenewmove@gmail.com. Click here to get more information.
Check out this new poster for 101X and Chillville’s Homegrown Live (or Homegrown Chill) created by Jake Lenahan from OHN – pretty damn sharp! Govinda, OHN, and Shuttle Debris will be the three bands playing in our first Homegrown show. Click here for more details on the February 18th event at The Parish, or to see the original poster.

There have been a ton of tour announcements recently… just a typical spring lineup in Austin, really. The big one we just found out a few minutes ago? Ladytron! Yep, they’ll be back, playing Stubbs on April 21st. Below are some of the upcoming shows:
March 31 – Neko Case w/ Shearwater @ Stubbs
April 7 – Ratatat @ Stubbs
April 12 – Morrissey @ Bass Concert Hall
April 21 – Ladytron w/ the Faint @ Stubbs
April 24 – The Kills @ Emo’s
April 25 – Franz Ferdinand @ La Zona Rosa
April 28 – Mates of State @ La Zona Rosa
May 1 – Death Cab for Cutie w/ Matt Costa and Ra Ra Riot @ Austin Music Hall
Fleet Foxes just premiered a new video for Mykonos. Also, this is unconfirmed and on the DL, but we’ve heard rumors of Fleet Foxes singer Robin Pecknold doing a solo set at at SXSW shindig. Just a few days ago, fans stumbled upon the MySpace page for a band called White Antelope, that had his name listed. He has since confirmed that it is a casual side project, so the rumors have some corroborating evidence. We’ll let you know as soon as the buzz is confirmed.
In the announcements realm, Ed Droste of Grizzly Bear directed his Twitter friends towards a new Stereogum post talking with him about progress on mixing the followup to 2006’s Yellow House EP.
And if you love SXSW but hate spending money, now you’ve got an option other than hitting the free day shows or volunteering: you can be an intern for Purevolume. They set up a house during SXSW each year, and then deliver a stellar lineup each time. If you wanna learn more about the music industry while listening to awesome live music and partying ’til the wee hours for free, then this is definitely worth checking out.
Tonight, Built By Snow is playing a Homegrown show at Creekside that is pretty much going to be awesome (and at only $5 cover, a deal!). BBS plays hook-filled synth-happy 80’s-influenced indie pop, and as a bonus to their great new album, MEGA, is really fun live as well. Harlem and Hollywood Gossip open, which means you should definitely get to Creekside on time. See you there?
Thursday, Oh No! Oh My! is playing a free show at Emo’s! Their name makes every thought after an exclamation(!), and their music is so upbeat that we can pretty much guarantee that you’ll be grinning from the first song. Really, these guys are ridiculously adorable, and it should be the perfect start to your weekend (and in Austin, you know Thursday is the new Friday).
Or, you could check out Will Johnson from Centro-matic doing a solo gig at Mohawk.
Friday, there is a killer show at Red7 – really, your head may expode from the rock. Monotonix is an Israeli punk band, who in their fall show at the Mohawk played everywhere in the outside area except the stage, and ended their set in the middle of Red River at midnight. They lit their cymbals on fire (let me repeat: they lit their cymbals on fire), and threw themselves into the crowd without thought for life and limb. At the end of the show, you’ll likely stumble out of the venue covered in beer and sweat, mumbling that it was the craziest show you’ve ever seen.
Pictured above is the Strange Boys, who will open with their jangly southern garage rock. And keep it on the DL, but we’ve heard that they are playing a house show later that evening, so if you’re downtown keep an eye out for flyers. We’ve got a feeling that their crunchy guitars will sound even more rockin’ in a tiny venue packed with drunk people.
The initial lineup for 2009 is here! (And it rocks.) This incredible camping and music festival will be held from June 11-14th this year. The party takes place on a beautiful 700-acre farm in Manchester, Tennessee. This will be an amazing 4-day weekend of over 100 bands, comedians, art, activities, workshops, vendors and much more! If you can go, by all means treat yourself to a music experience unlike any other!

I’ve had the opportunity to experience Bonnaroo twice so far, and it trumps any festival I’ve been to in super-fun-ness. There’s music 24/7. While the main acts take place in the center of the venue, or “Center-Roo”, you’ll find smaller acts and dance parties popping up round-the-clock throughout the campgrounds. But, these aren’t ordinary campgrounds… venture out and you’ll find what seems to be miles of tents, hippies, turkey legs, sno-cones, tie-dye, green endeavors and recycling, drum circles, ferris wheels, art installations, port-a-johns (and those fancy pink port-a-janes), dancers, vendors, free spirits, party favors, nakedness, you name it. In fact, “Shakedown Lane” is the place to find just about anything you want at Bonnaroo. Mention that to any glassy-eyed kid in the whole place, and they’ll direct you. One thing that sets Bonnaroo apart from highly-regulated festivals like Coachella, and even ACL, is its lack of folks patrolling the place in badges. Snoop Dogg, one of this year’s performers, will we pleased to know there are no cops here – unless they pay for a ticket like everyone else (which is not likely at “five easy payments of $50″). You’re generally alright rockin’ out in whatever fashion you please, as long as you don’t have a seven-foot bong attached to your face. After all, glass can be dangerous, and suffocating in your tent due to a leaky nitrous tank is a major festival buzzkill as well. Just be careful. The good news is, people really look out for each other at this festival. There’s a huge sense of community that is shared each year, as the venue is transformed into a nifty subculture of folks all gathered for the love of music. So, pack well, wear lots of sunscreen, and take care of yourself and your friends if you find yourself in Manchester this June for Bonnaroo’s eighth run! You’re guaranteed to have the time of your life. Seeing Sigur Ros perform last year until 3AM was one of the highlights of my concert-going experiences to date. And I lied, I actually did see some police at Bonnaroo – THE Police! Twenty years past their prime, and they were incredible. Larger than life acts like The Police, Pearl Jam, Metallica and Tool become surreal somehow on Bonnaroo’s enormously large and infinitely loud middle-of-nowhere, million-dollar farm stages?! It’s nuts. So sell some plasma now and get tickets on Saturday at “ROO“. You’ll be glad you did. Just check out this lineup! Nine Inch Nails
