Feist – the Water

Saturday, April 11th, 2009

We came across the short film that just debuted for the Water, a track from Feist’s 2007 album The Reminder. Head to Stereogum to watch both the 15-minute film – featuring Cillian Murphy, who you may recognize as the Scarecrow from Batman Begins – and an interesting making-of video.

Great New Artist

Friday, April 10th, 2009

We were recently linked to Denmark-based Chimes&Bells by Simon Raymonde (of Cocteau Twins), and are completely diggin’ it. A new band who labels themselves via MySpace within the enormously vague ’melodramatic popular song’ category, their actual sound is dreamy, lovely, and occasionally very eerie. The music sounds like the end of a long night, when you’re tired and ready for sleep. Think Sigur Ros, maybe, or occasionally Grizzly Bear, and definitely give them a listen.

Their new EP is going to see wider release very soon soonish, and we have a feeling they are about to get some major online love for it, so check them out now if you want to say ‘I heard them when’. Sadly, I doubt they’ll be touring around here any time soon, but we can always hope for SXSW next year.

St. Vincent Video

The video is out for Actor Out of Work, and catches the quirkiness of the song perfectly. Check it out:

SXSW in Photos

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

It’s been weeks since the insanity passed, and we’re still recovering from the influx of tourists and musicians to our fair city. We interviewed some stellar artists, snapped thousands of photos, and are still going through all the material. Here are just a few shots of that crazy week… click the band name for more photos.

St. Vincent Coming to Town

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

St. Vincent

June in Austin is going to be rough on your sleep cycle, with summer entrenched and touring season in full swing. Seven big shows have already been announced for the month, and one we’re pretty darn excited about is St. Vincent. We caught a preview of a few tracks from her upcoming album, Actor, at her SXSW showcase, and are now impatiently awaiting the May 5th release date. And it definitely won’t hurt that Pattern Is Movement is supporting her on the tour. We first wrote about PIM when they were in town back in October, and can only reiterate that between St. Vincent’s rockin’ new material and their awesome live show, you don’t wanna miss either of them. They play the Mohawk, June 19.

News Bits

Friday, March 27th, 2009

We’ve been really diggin’ the video (below) for Handsome Furs’ I’m Confused, which – as you’d expect from any video that includes zombie hipsters – basically rocks. It’s creepy, with a second or two of NSFW.

Speaking of zombies, Metric released Help, I’m Alive to lather fans into a drooling frenzy anticipating the release of Fantasies, which drops in less than two weeks. We’re particularly fond of the 1% Free remix, which you can stream via Hype Machine.

You may have heard that Spike Jonze has been working on a movie adaptation of beloved childhood classic book Where the Wild Things Are… did you know that Arcade Fire was tapped to do the soundtrack? The trailer came out a few days ago, and looks and sounds pretty much awesome.

IFC Crossroads Party

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

It was a struggle finagling our way into the ultra-private IFC Crossroads Party with Gomez and the Decemberists, but we managed! The lighting at Pangaea, a dance club except during sxsw insanity, was wonderful, so check out a few shots from the night.
