Almost Live from ACL – Day 3

We made a late start of it at the park Sunday, and in the ensuing insanity had no time for the last blog of the evening. After after-partying entirely too much the night before, we descended on the park just in time for Okkervil River. Despite Jonathan’s recent departure for Shearwater, the band was more than up to the task of keeping the crowd dancing, singing along, and – perhaps most important, in a festival where people arrive late and leave early for other bands already playing – sticking around.

Then it was time for White Denim. Despite their homegrown status, these guys are worth checking out any time you can. We danced crazy for 45 minutes while they played with their usual gritty intensity, despite the occasional sound bleedthrough from the Raconteurs.

After catching ‘Steady As She Goes’ from Jack White et al., we wandered over to the WaMu Stage for Galactic, and arrived just in time to hear Chali 2na from Jurassic 5 drop in and absolutely destroy the crowd for a few songs. Then we headed for Band of Horses, and couldn’t have been the only people annoyed at the Foo Fighters for starting 5 minutes early in the middle of a Band of Horses song – it effectively ruined the end of their set, drowning their softer sound with sheer rock volume.

Once we’d stayed sufficiently to ’see’ the Foo Fighters, it was time for Conor Oberst/Jenny Lewis/M. Ward at La Zona Rosa. We heard that M. Ward’s Friday ACL slot was a bit of a disaster; he was inside the WaMu tent, playing at the same time as Gogol Bordello, so sound bleedthrough was a major issue. As a guy with a guitar, it’s an understandable problem, but sad, if last night was a good indication of how lovely and haunting he can sound live. And Conor Oberst will always, inescapably, make us wish we were hearing Bright Eyes instead.

And thus wraps up another ACL weekend in our fair city; may traffic return to normal soon, and let everyone recover from the glut of awesome music in such a concentrated space and time… So, you’ll be at Federico Aubele tomorrow, right?
