Wednesday Night

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

If you want to chill out this evening, maybe relax with a few beverages while staring up at the sky, Dreamtiger at Beauty Bar is for you. These Californian shoegazers create an atmosphere that fits their name perfectly; imagine wandering through a dream filled with surreal images and overexposed colors, confronting images unnatural and eerie, and you’ll get the gist of their sound. It’s ambient, atmospheric music you can sink into, and will ease you smoothly through your middle-of-the-week. Catch these guys tonight if you want a soundtrack to your evening that’ll make you feel like the coolest person at the party.

Another option, if you feel more like rocking out, is Booher and the Turkeyz at Emo’s Lounge. Disregard the name if you’d like; this group includes members of Zykos, with singer Mike Booher lending his name and vocals. We’ve been hearing about this new project of his for a while, and feel it’ll definitely be worth the cover. Hollywood Gossip and Frank Smith open.

September 7th Catch of the Day – Nightmares on Wax

Sunday, September 7th, 2008

Nightmares on Wax have been around since my club DJ’ing days in Dallas and L.A. Most of their earlier work was more upbeat and DJ friendly, therefore it was very likely that you would hear them at a rave, club, or party in the late 90’s. Recently in the past few years, it has seemed like they have slowed down their BPM (beats per minute) and become a more “chill” electronic act. As I have aged over the years, I noticed that my preference for BPM’s has leaned towards a slower pace which makes “Betcha” a perfect fit as today’s catch. Nightmares on Wax have recently released a fantastic album entitled Thought So… (where you can find “Betcha”), which really embraces groovy beats that are perfect for just hangin’ around and/or chillin’. Enjoy!

Shearwater – Live on Chillville

Sunday, September 7th, 2008

Shearwater was with us in studio this morning, talking about dressing-room food in Europe, the joys of an album re-release – “there were some things about it that we wanted to change, and we realized we actually had a chance to go back in time and fix it”, and the can’t-believe-it’s-not-photoshopped cover art for Rook and the artists who created it. Jonathan spoke vehemently about the term ‘side project’: “It’s awful, it’s the kiss of death; it’s like, you know, ‘it’s like this band you like, but not as good’”, and how comparisons between Shearwater and Okkervil River frustrate him.

There was the obligatory new music discussion (“already got plans for a new EP in the first part of next year, and then a new album sometime in the not-too-distant future”), and then, as usual in conversations with the ornithologist, the discussion turned to his bird watching endeavors in Austin and around the world (including Rook promo films of him in the Falkland Islands).
